Uncanny X-Men #4 – Review

Marvel is Killing It with the Uncanny X-Men!

This review contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #4. I’ll post a spoiler-limited review of the full first volume when Arc 1 is complete.

With the release of Uncanny X-Men #4 this week, we dive deeper into Charles Xavier’s complex relationship with Sarah Gaunt, and the tense situation facing Rogue and her team as they grapple with a severely injured Wolverine and a pissed off Sarah.

This issue offers more history into Sarah Gaunt’s past with Charles, and the portrayal of their early relationship feels both natural and heartfelt. The reveal that Sarah is pregnant with Charles’s child escalates quickly. The explanation behind Gaunt’s tragic transformation into a monstrous figure is heartbreaking and dark, making you truly feel the pain she’s endured. I wonder if redemption is possible for her character.

The urgency of Rogue and Nightcrawler’s search for Logan is stressfull as they race against time to find him before it’s too late. While this moment is incredibly tense, it’s difficult to feel fully invested, knowing that Logan is going to survive since he has his own solo series (Wolverine #2 just dropped this week).

Each character’s dialogue is distinct, and it works masterfully. Rogue’s lines, with her strong Southern accent, are especially fun to read—I can almost hear her animated voice from the classic X-Men show.

The action in this issue is intense, especially Rogue’s brutal battle against the monstrous Gaunt. Gaunt’s transformation gives her immense strength, and you can really feel the punishment Rogue endures in their fight.

The final scenes, with Gambit leading the remaining X-Men into battle against Gaunt’s army, are thrilling. I’m eager to see how this plays out in the next issue, and I expect some stunning artwork in those upcoming pages. Wolverine’s return at the end of the issue, just in time to prepare for the fight, was such an epic moment.

Speaking of the art—David Marquez has done a phenomenal job throughout the issue. Every panel is stunning, and I hope they release a deluxe edition just to appreciate the artwork on a larger scale. The cover is chef’s kiss—10/10.

Uncanny X-Men #4 left me pumped for the next issue. In my opinion, this is the strongest ongoing X-Men title right now. Gail Simone delivers powerful story beats, and with Marquez on art, this series is shaping up to be something truly special.
