Ultimates…Assemble!
The Ultimate Universe has been a standout highlight this year, delivering fresh reimaginings of beloved characters. So far, all three solo series have been nothing short of excellent! With stellar storytelling across the board and bold takes that challenge the status quo, The Ultimates by Deniz Camp continue that trend, bringing together an intriguing team of heroes in a way that feels both exciting and fresh.
This universe carries massive stakes. With The Maker set to return in just a few months, the team finds themselves racing against time to prevent his comeback—a dire threat that looms large over everything they do.
Each character in The Ultimates embodies what it means to be a hero, fully aware of the stakes at hand. There’s no time for hesitation or playing it safe; it’s all about taking action—every single day. While this series leans a bit heavier on action compared to the other ongoing Ultimate stories, it’s a visual treat thanks to the stunning artwork by Juan Frigeri, with Phil Noto stepping in beautifully for issue #4.
One of the most compelling aspects of this series is watching Tony Stark as Iron Lad and Reed Richards as Dr. Doom try to find solutions to their shared problem. Their dynamic is not only entertaining but also layered with emotion. Doom wrestles with overwhelming grief, while Tony struggles to live up to his father’s legacy. The characters’ unique origins make this series highly accessible, even for readers who aren’t deeply familiar with their history. Every take feels fresh, distinct, and incredibly engaging.
As we approach the conclusion of this first arc in issue #6, it’s hard not to wonder how this storyline will ripple into the other Ultimate series. There’s certainly room for more interaction between the ongoing titles, and I hope to see more crossover moving forward. One moment that particularly stands out for its audacity and sheer wildness is the way Hulk’s power is measured in terms of the scale of Hiroshima. It’s an insane, jaw-dropping showcase of just how strong these characters are.
With 2025 on the horizon, the Ultimate Universe is poised for even more excitement, with new characters set to debut and fresh stories waiting to unfold. This series has been an absolute thrill ride from start to finish—I tore through all six issues in one sitting, unable to put it down.
Issues #1-6 of The Ultimates are available now at your local comic shop, and the trade paperback is set to release on February 4th. Don’t miss out on this exhilarating adventure!
