Scarlett Miniseries Review

Scarlett Miniseries Review

I may have found a new favorite series: Scarlett by Kelly Thompson. This phenomenal five-issue mini-series has left me hoping it will evolve into a longer, ongoing series.

My experience with the G.I. Joe universe is minimal—my only exposure being the Channing Tatum movie from about a decade ago. I’ve picked up Transformers Vol. #1, and I’m planning to catch up on the new Energon Universe stories from Skybound. This universe that Skybound and Hasbro are building has massive potential, and it’s certainly working to attract new readers.

Minor Spoilers Ahead!

Shana O’Hara, a Black Ops agent who isn’t afraid to bend the rules, is a total badass. She’s a fierce operative on a mission to find her lost friend and stop deadly weapons from falling into Cobra’s hands. The world-building in this pocket of the Energon Universe is incredible. From the mysterious and deadly Arashikage clan to the secret code words exchanged between Shana and Jinx, everything works to expand this dynamic world in fascinating ways.

The relationship between Shana and Jinx’s is what truly drew me into the story. The flashback panels added depth, humanizing these characters in a way that makes their struggles and joys feel personal and real. Shana reminds me a lot of Lara Croft, which is part of why I was so enthralled with this series. Their complicated relationship, set against such a tense backdrop, was a highlight for me. Storm Shadow is an interesting character as well, and I’m hoping we get to see more of him in the future!

This series could (and should) be adapted into a movie. The action is cinematic, with our protagonist jumping out of helicopters and diving into multi-story aquariums to infiltrate skyscrapers. It’s Mission Impossible-style action, and it’s so good. Marco Ferrari delivers some truly stunning panels, showing the care and creativity that went into this series.

While self-contained, this story has larger implications for the wider Energon Universe. Kelly Thompson and Marco Ferrari have created a thrilling action-espionage story that I’d recommend to anyone looking for a great read with epic visuals.

Issues #1-5 are available online or at your local comic shop! The trade paperback will be releasing on November 19th.
