Hyde Street #1 Review

Hyde Street #1 Review

It’s time to get spooky with the latest series from Ghost Machine Pro – Hyde Street #1!

With Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis at the helm, it didn’t take long for things to get terrifying – and it’s certainly working. Hyde Street is focused on capturing the horror element in comics, and it will be interesting to see if it maintains this intensity throughout the run.

This issue introduces two characters – Mr. X-Ray and Pranky the Scout – both of whom shine in their own terrifying ways. Pranky is a literal demon who kills an elderly woman by trapping her in the road and guilting her over the murder of her child and husband before running her over with a steamroller. Brutal panels and chilling dialogue really make you want to rethink the next time you see a scout. Pranky’s cold smile as he lures his victim into the road is haunting, but Reis’s art makes the moment downright petrifying. You can almost hear the crunch of bones as the steamroller crushes its way across the page.

We’re also introduced to Mr. X-Ray, who I’m assuming will be the character we primarily follow throughout the series. He’s a con man who targets children and manipulates people to get what he wants. His backstory, explaining how he ended up on Hyde Street, is extremely entertaining. Seeing his life before his downfall makes him a satisfyingly hatable character.

I love the premise that Hyde Street exists in every city, acting as a crossroad to a nightmarish realm.

I honestly loved this issue. The pacing was perfect, the art is incredible, and the lore behind Hyde Street has me hooked already! The Ghost Machine team has an astonishing track record with these new launches. We’ve got a few more new series releasing next month, and I’m definitely looking forward to those – especially issue #2 of Hyde Street.
