Yo Joe!
It’s finally here! G.I. Joe #1 dropped on 11/13, marking the third ongoing series in the Energon Universe.
The creative team—Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire—takes charge of this exciting new chapter in the universe, which has been carefully built up through other Energon titles like Destro, Scarlett, Cobra Commander, Duke, Transformers, and Void Rivals.
This issue delivers plenty of action, though the pacing felt slower compared to the previously released miniseries. As an ongoing series, it’s clear there’s more room to gradually develop the story, but it definitely reads differently. That said, it’s still an engaging and worthwhile start!
We’re introduced to the G.I. Joe squad in full force, and it’s nothing short of epic. The team dynamics and internal struggles are gripping, particularly the challenges Conrad faces as he tries to lead. His struggles are relatable and portrayed with emotional depth, making his character arc compelling. This issue also sets the stage for high-stakes conflicts ahead—and let me tell you, I’m hyped to see what’s next!
For newcomers, this issue might feel like it’s missing some backstory if you haven’t read the other Energon Universe titles. I’d highly recommend catching up on those first (and trust me, they’re phenomenal).
The ending of this issue delivers action and tension, with massive implications for the rest of the series. It’s an excellent hook that left me eager for more.
As I mentioned in my review for Duke, Jordie Bellaire’s artwork is stunning. The characters and world are beautifully rendered, with every panel a visual delight.
G.I. Joe #1 is a strong start that builds the groundwork for future events while remaining thrilling and entertaining. The Energon Universe just keeps getting better.
