Happy Wednesday! This week I got a backlog of comics from my local shop, so let’s dive right into Exceptional X-Men #1!
This is the third ongoing X-Men series, and issue #1 focuses exclusively on Kate Pryde. As I mentioned in my review of Wolverine: Revenge #1, I’m relatively new to the X-Men comics, so my understanding of all the characters isn’t particularly strong. No worries, though—issue #1 does a great job of keeping things easy to follow!
This issue flies by, thanks to its dynamic dialogue and stunning art. Kate Pryde is trying to live a peaceful life after the events of Krakoa and her departure from the X-Men, but it doesn’t take long before she’s back to walking through walls. This issue takes the time to focus on Kate and her psyche without introducing many distractions. Set in Chicago, it’s great to see references to the area I’m from.
Prior knowledge of Krakoa storylines is certainly helpful, but as with the other ongoing X-Men titles, it’s not essential unless you’re particularly interested.
Surprisingly, this story feels very Gen Z without any cringe. Eve Ewing does a brilliant job of keeping the dialogue natural and relatable.
Issue #1 is a strong start, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one!
