After Scarlett completed its run last week, I’ve been on an Energon Universe kick. With the series finale of Destro releasing today, here’s my review of Destro #1-5 (Volume 1).
With three limited series already released, Destro is the final miniseries before G.I. Joe releases next month, and it’s certainly keeping me excited! Dan Watters delivers a fun and intriguing story, making a great addition to the Energon Universe. As someone with next to no knowledge of the G.I. Joe universe, these characters are all new to me, so I really appreciate how accessible the stories have been, inviting a new era of fans into the fold.
The series opens with civil riots against the prime minister of Darklonia, but suddenly Battle Android Troops (B.A.T.S) arrive and kill everyone—both government militia and rioters. After this violent start, we meet our main character, Destro, who seizes control of Darklonia. Throughout the story, we see Destro in various lights. He’s certainly no hero, but his more vulnerable moments add a nice human touch.

The series is largely about corporate espionage, focusing on two brothers who run Extensive Enterprises, competing in the same arms-dealing business as Destro. Their sibling rivalry and chaotic schemes were a highlight for me, and I enjoyed seeing how M.A.R.S. and Extensive Enterprises—two leaders in the field—differ in their approaches. Issue #4’s backstory on why Destro wears his mask was a standout moment, adding depth to the character.

My main critique is that certain aspects felt rushed, especially the love interest in issue #5. The relationship lacked development, though the nuclear-warhead-at-sunset moment was fittingly over the top. Perhaps my unfamiliarity with the characters’ backstories played a role, but it still felt abrupt.
The plot can sometimes be predictable, but that doesn’t diminish the overall enjoyment. Issue #5 wraps up the story nicely and even more sets up the greater Energon Universe.

Destro is a fast-paced, action-packed series that will appeal to new and old fans alike. It has strong characters and an exciting narrative, and I highly recommend checking it out.
Destro issues #1-5 are available now, and the trade paperback releases on December 3rd.
Make sure to check out my review of Scarlett, which shares the same universe!
