DC All In Special #1 Review

DC All In Special #1 Review

It’s time to go All-In! Comic legends Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are teaming up to tell the next chapter of the DC Universe.

After a break to work on some indie comics, Scott Snyder is back at DC! I’ve been a fan of Snyder for well over a decade. I love so many of his stories, follow him on Substack, and have even met him a few times at C2E2. Needless to say, my expectations were high. And the excitement only grows knowing Joshua Williamson is on board—he usually delivers gold. With a excellent art team supporting this issue, it feels like a slam dunk for DC.

And… I’m All In.

Minor Spoilers Ahead

I’ve been on a DC comics hiatus for the better part of two years, but this issue rekindled my excitement and reminded me why I love the DC Universe. The story starts with the Justice League gathering at their new Watchtower, but things quickly go south when disaster strikes. For anyone new to DC, this comic is a great entry point. It’s accessible while still honoring the past, which I really appreciated.

The DC Universe holds a special place in my heart—the characters, the lore, Gotham, Metropolis, the New Gods, and so much more. This issue brought back that nostalgia. Seeing so many heroes together in one room, collaborating, made me hopeful for the future of DC storytelling. I stepped away from DC because the characters didn’t feel like themselves for a while; the stories felt forced. (Not to say there weren’t gems in the last couple of years.) But this comic feels like a true superhero story.

Darkseid is… terrifying. He crushes the Justice League’s hopes—and those of his own family. The art team excels in bringing this villain and the heroes to life, making the story feel epic. What could have been a standard Darkseid story took unexpected turns, especially with the multiverse element. Without veering into Death Metal territory (which you should definitely read), this issue opens up the new Absolute Universe. With Booster Gold stuck there, I’m curious how DC plans to bring him back—and whether we’ll see crossover events between universes.

I won’t dive too deeply into the upcoming Absolute Books (though you can expect my reviews when they release), but the glimpse we get of this new world is insane. I originally thought the Absolute Universe might be similar to the Earth One or The New 52 comics, but this world is something else entirely. It’s chaotic, and I’ve already set up my pull list for the upcoming Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman titles.

One of the coolest features of this comic is the flipbook format, with two intersecting perspectives (Justice League | Darkseid). It’s a unique, and it’s executed brilliantly.

This extended issue gives you every reason to head to your local comic shop. I hope DC continues to deliver great stories like this. I was nervous going in, but now I can’t wait to dive into Batman #153, which is sitting on my desk. I’ll link a comic shop locator below—go pick up this issue, and while you’re there, grab some other books. Stay tuned for my future reviews!
