Absolute Wonder Woman #2 was released this week and is easily my comic highlight of the week!
(Minor Spoilers Ahead!)
This issue picks up right where we left off in issue #1, and seeing Diana battle a ginormous kaiju is nothing short of intense and epic. Diana shows zero remorse and fights like a one-woman army! Alongside the action, we’re treated to some top-tier backstory and the first appearance of Steve Trevor. As with other Absolute titles, this story offers a fresh and interesting spin on familiar characters. Instead of Steve arriving on Themyscira, he washes up—of all places—in hell.
In issue #1, Kelly Thompson delved into Diana’s past, highlighting her childhood on the Wild Isle with her adoptive mother, Circe. This issue continues that exploration by chronicling Diana’s first encounter with Steve Trevor. Their introduction is both clever and entertaining. I found myself laughing at moments and glued to the pages—the storytelling was extremely well executed. This version of Wonder Woman leans into magical elements, with Diana using magic to translate Steve’s native tongue, English, into Greek so they can communicate. The visuals accompanying this scene were stunning.
Shifting back to the present, after the intense battle with the Harbinger Prime, we follow Diana as she confronts the U.S. military. Unsurprisingly, the military isn’t thrilled about a third party joining their fight. However, Diana remains unshaken, showcasing her confidence and immense power. She’s here to save lives, not to be hindered by bureaucracy or controlling behaviors. These scenes emphasize her independence and refusal to bow to outside authority, which is a defining aspect of her character.
Artist Hayden Sherman and colorist Jordie Bellaire deserve massive credit for bringing this issue to life. Every page is visually breathtaking, from the larger-than-life kaiju battles to the intimate, eerie moments in hell. The artwork is nothing less than a visual feast.
Absolute Wonder Woman #2 is not an issue to miss! Building on the stellar foundation of issue #1, it delivers action, heart, and stunning visuals in equal measure. I can’t wait for the next installment in this arc—and for the bigger connections to the Absolute Universe.
