Absolute Wonder Woman #1 – Review

Absolute Wonder Woman #1 – Review

Absolute Wonder Woman is finally in our hands, and it arrives just in time to celebrate Wonder Woman Day earlier this week! After the exciting launch of DC All In Special #1 and the wild release of Absolute Batman #1, it’s now Wonder Woman’s time to shine!

Having Kelly Thompson lead this series is a fantastic choice. After recently concluding the incredible Scarlett series and a personal favorite of mine, the Black Cloak series, we know she can deliver great stories—and she’s done it again!

I’m thrilled to discuss this issue because I truly feel it has the potential to revitalize Wonder Woman. This issue was straight-up epic! We get a fresh take on Diana’s origin story. Rather than being raised by her fellow Amazons, she was raised on the Isle of Hell. The story takes time to really build out Diana’s childhood and explore how she became the warrior we know today. This Diana is here to kick some serious butt.

The opening sequence leading up to Wonder Woman’s introduction was brilliantly done and perfectly paced. Having her appear atop a skeletal pegasus was just nuts—in the best way! It was such a cool visual moment that really set the tone for this epic fantasy.

Diana’s character design is also top-tier—the helmet, armor, and tattoos are incredible! In an interview, Kelly Thompson mentioned that the tattoos will play a role in the story, so I’m really interested to see how that unfolds in future issues. The addition of Diana wielding magic is another cool twist on her character, and she’s certainly going to need it, given the state of Earth—with alien invasions and Gotham’s murder rate spiking by 70%.

While all the badassery was amazing, I think my favorite part of the issue was the motherhood dynamic between Circe and Diana. We get several panels explaining how Diana ended up on the Isle of Hell and why Circe, sentenced there herself, is now responsible for raising her. Watching Circe and Diana’s relationship grow was incredibly touching and added a personal element to the story that made me feel truly connected.

As much as Thompson nailed the writing, this issue wouldn’t have been the same without Hayden Sherman’s incredible art. The detail in the monsters, characters, world-building, armor, and even facial expressions was top-notch. A 10/10 job!

This issue is definitely one of my top comics of the year, and I highly recommend rushing to your local comic shop to grab a copy. You won’t be disappointed with this story, and I can’t wait for next month to continue Diana’s journey.
