It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s… ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN!
With the release of the third Absolute title today, it’s finally Kal-El’s time to shine! Jason Aaron takes the helm to deliver his unique spin on Superman with Absolute Superman #1. But does it match the quality of the first two Absolute titles?
As with other Absolute releases, expect a completely reimagined world for our hero. This time, Krypton hasn’t exploded, and there’s no Fortress of Solitude! DC has shared some preview panels, so be sure to soak in every detail—they’re spectacular.
Kal-El’s journey feels familiar, yet distinctly different from the Superman we’ve known for the past 80+ years. Krypton remains, but it’s teetering on the edge of disaster. I’m guessing Clark will still be sent off by his parents to escape his doomed home, though this time, he’s no longer a baby.
This book’s tone is much darker than recent Superman runs, and I’m all in for this version. This Superman has zero tolerance for exploitation and slavery, showing no remorse in his battle against evil. Krypton is a dystopian planet with grim technologies like rain dispensers that only release water if purchased.
The world-building is outstanding, delving into Krypton’s social hierarchies and systemic corruption. These themes feel strikingly relevant, echoing some of today’s real-world issues. You can feel the pain that the characters go through.
Rafa Sandoval’s art is absolutely stunning! The Kryptonian suits are impressive, and Krypton itself is beautifully rendered.
Overall, I really enjoyed this issue. I don’t think it was as strong of an issue compared to the other Absolute titles but the bar was set incredibly high, and this comic is super!
