Ultimate Universe Year 2 is now in full swing with Ultimate Wolverine #1!
After being teased in Ultimate Universe Year 1, we finally get to meet the ultimate version of our favorite bub—Logan. Taking a different approach from other Ultimate titles, this version of Wolverine isn’t exactly a hero.
Spoiler warning
This issue jumps between multiple timelines, showcasing Wolverine’s (or should we say the Winter Soldier?) journey. At first, I found it a bit tricky to differentiate between flashbacks and the present, but after a reread, everything made a lot more sense.
There’s no shortage of action in this issue—it’s bloody, intense, and honestly some of the most brutal combat I’ve seen in a Marvel comic recently. I’m almost surprised Marvel didn’t slap a red-band label on it, especially considering it’s more violent than their most recent red-band title, Daredevil. That said, the action is stunning. From Wolverine jumping out of a plane without a parachute to battling Nightcrawler while he “poofs” unpredictably all over the place, the visuals are fantastic.

I’ve noticed mixed opinions about Wolverine’s new suit design. While I wouldn’t call it the best Wolverine costume we’ve ever seen, I think it fits the darker tone of the character and still manages to look pretty epic.
This issue also delivers two major deaths—though I’ll admit, I was hoping those characters would stick around a bit longer. Oh well.
I’m hoping for some crossover action with the X-Men team being written and illustrated by Peach Momoko. The tones of the two stories couldn’t be more different, but it feels inevitable that they’ll intersect at some point.
On the art front, Alessandro Cappuccio and Bryan Valenza nailed it. They’ve perfectly captured the dark, moody tone of the story with panels that are downright stunning—even if you don’t know the context. The visuals alone make this issue worth checking out.

Overall, Ultimate Wolverine #1 is a solid issue. It’s not the strongest in the Ultimate line, but it’s a promising start that lays the groundwork for an exciting Year 2 in the Ultimate Universe.
