Cobra Commander: Determined to Rule The World (Volume 1) – Review

All Hail Cobra!

I LOVE the Energon Universe! This is such an exciting corner of the comic world, delivering hit after hit. With Cobra Commander, writer Joshua Williamson and artist Andrea Milano have created something truly fun and engaging.

Everything about this miniseries is fantastic. I had almost zero knowledge of G.I. Joe, Cobra, or Transformers before the Energon Universe came along. My interest was minimal, but now I’m completely fascinated. Cobra Commander is a villain, a trickster, a manipulative piece of ****—and yet on every page, I was eager to see what he would do next. What atrocity would he commit, all in the name of Cobra.

Watching Cobra rise to power is captivating, and it builds on an already well-connected universe. We meet characters introduced in other miniseries who keep adding layers to this world (check out my reviews for those miniseries down below!). You can enjoy Cobra Commander without reading the other series, but having the broader context makes it even richer.

This is a villain’s story, through and through. There are no heroes flying in to save the day; nearly every character operates in a spectrum of evil. In this world, it’s not about who’s good—it’s about who’s worse. The series is bloody, brutal, and unflinching. Characters are beaten, murdered, humiliated, and abused, but it all serves a larger purpose. This isn’t just a giant action set-piece; it’s building toward something bigger.

The art in this book is legendary. The bleak, brutal style perfectly captures the harshness of the characters and their world, with incredible detail in every scene.

With G.I. Joe releasing in just a few days (November 13), I’m thrilled to see these characters becoming regular fixtures. Cobra Commander is an intense, thrilling ride that I think anyone can enjoy—even if, like me, you’re new to this universe.
